The right temperature in fish farms
The aquaculture industry in Norway continues to be robust and growing rapidly. Norway remains a world-leading producer of salmon, and innovations to increase sustainability and efficiency in fish farming are constantly being developed. From the development of vaccine technologies to the use of artificial intelligence to monitor fish health and environmental conditions, the sector is positioned for sustained growth.
Financially, the aquaculture industry has shown strong performance, with a record-high export value for salmon reported in the first half of 2023, reaching approximately NOK 58.5 billion due to high prices and favorable exchange rates (Business Norway). This trend emphasizes the growing economic importance of aquaculture in Norway, as a supplement to the traditional fishing industry.
Farming requires perfect temperature conditions for fish growth, but also for the best possible treatment of juvenile fish and seaweed. Energy Rent are experts in temperature, and we help you with the right temperature in fish farms for fast and efficient results.
Fish in the blood
Fishing is in the blood of Norwegians, and the industry has been a mainstay of Norwegian culture and history for longer than we can imagine. In addition to catching fish on the open sea, we have been building fish farms all along the coast for the past 50 years, and the development is happening faster and faster. Now, land-based fish farms can be the solution to problems such as lice, algae and other fish diseases.
The right temperature in fish farms
Farmed fish depend on the right temperature conditions for good growth conditions. This applies to land-based as well as offshore and freshwater-based facilities. The increasingly warmer sea is bad news for the salmon in the fish cages - which eat less if the water reaches 16 degrees. In Canada, two million salmon died after a marine heatwave that warmed the water to 20 degrees in October.
Being able to control the temperature is essential for a successful fish farm. In the summer of 2019, Stian Aspaas and Magne Røe took over a land-based facility in Tydal. They noticed that the incoming groundwater was too cold and installed a heat pump to increase the temperature. A simple move, but in warmer conditions, the char grew much faster and production time at Norwegian Fish Farms Tydal was halved.
Fast and mobile solutions
In 2019, we were contacted by a major player in the aquaculture industry. They were expecting large quantities of fish, but the water was not hot enough in the facility - as it was brought in directly from a passing river. We then delivered a 3 MW boiler that heated the water from 2 to 10 degrees in a fast and efficient way - just what was needed for the facility to be able to receive the fish.
As one of Norway's leading companies in heating and cooling, we at Energy Rent offer the solutions that suit you best, to adapt the temperature to optimal conditions. We have experience with both heating for more growth, and cooling to adapt growth in overloaded slaughterhouses. Our equipment can both heat and cool brackish water and seawater - and we rent out titanium exchangers that function as hydraulic separators.
