Optimal water temperature for farmed fish
The fish farming industry in Norway is huge, with an annual turnover of more than NOK 116 billion. The largest part of this turnover comes from salmon farming. The temperature of the water plays an important role in order for the fish in aquaculture facilities to have a good life. The temperature of the water is critical for the fish to get enough oxygen, eat well and grow correctly. Farmed salmon thrive best in water that maintains a temperature of between 8 and 14 degrees. The optimum temperature is 13. Then the fish eat well and grow quickly. We at Energy Rent can help you get the correct water temperature!
Correct water temperature is important!
To achieve good growing conditions, the correct water temperature is essential. This applies to all breeding facilities. Increasingly warmer water temperatures in the sea create challenges for the fish, especially the salmon. Being able to control the water temperature is an important factor in running a successful fish farm.
If water temperatures are too high
If the temperature in the water is too hot, the fish will be stressed, already at over 16 degrees, the fish will be stressed. Then the fish eats less and the weight is reduced. At a warmer water temperature, the level of oxygen in the water drops. Farmed fish do not have the opportunity to swim to colder water temperatures, and the solution then is for the fish to swim downwards. This is because the deeper the fish go, the colder the water temperature becomes, and the more oxygen the fish get. If the fish has too hot a water temperature over time, this will be at the expense of the fish’s body function, and the fish will eventually suffocate. We can then install temporary cooling to lower the water temperature to 13 degrees, for optimal temperature.
A titanium heat exchanger is light and has superior mechanical properties, as well as providing highly efficient heat transfer. When we specially adapted the equipment to your needs, we can use a titanium exchanger to act as a hydraulic separator.
If water temperatures are too low
Very low temperatures will also cause the fish to become stressed, in the same way as with excessively high water temperatures. In 2019, we were contacted by a farm that had too cold a water temperature for a quantity of fish that was expected to arrive. The solution was then to deliver a 3MW boiler that heated the water brought in from a nearby river from 2 degrees to 10 degrees.
We have extensive experience with the correct water temperature in the fish farming industry
Energy Rent has broad experience in the aquaculture industry, both for heating and cooling the water temperature. We also have experience with heating and cooling to adapt to the temperature in overloaded slaughterhouses. Our equipment inventory is extensive and we have the expertise and equipment to be able to both heat and cool seawater and fresh water.
We were called when the customer had an emergency stop in their own heat supply to maintain the water temperature for breeding wrasse. A mobile heating center of 3000 kW, a titanium heat exchanger, pumps, hoses, and a tank were then delivered.
Fast and flexible solutions
We are very flexible and can deliver quickly if there is a need for urgent management of the water temperature, whether it is to achieve a higher or lower temperature. Contact us at Energy Rent if you need to check the water temperature in your breeding facility. We help with planning, adaptation, start-up, and delivery so that the normal operation of the plant can be maintained.
